With the increasing diversity of working environment, and request for better public safety and service quality, it is inevitable that maneuver job’s working hour is significantly prolonged, and its working content is becoming more complex. As a result, the job involvement of maneuver worker is directly affected.
Police job involvement has significant influence on common people’s feel of public security. This research takes current polices and firemen as representatives of maneuver worker. The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between maneuver job characteristics and job involvement; and with the evidences of related literatures and theories, and direct working practices, to clarify their relationship.
For reaching the above objectives, a total of 1,250 questionnaires were disseminated to all the police officers and firemen to investigate their attitudes toward job characteristics and job involvement. Subjects participated in this project voluntarily and anonymously. There were a total of 1,154 returned questionnaires, which resulted this research used questionnaires to gather 1,043 valid questionnaires, in a response rate of 90.38%; 111 copies are ineffective or incomplete.
This study finds the following facts, the whole five dimensions of maneuver worker’s job characteristics--skill variety, task identity, task significance, job autonomy and job feedback have obviously significant positive correlation on job involvement.
The degrees of maneuver moderate the skill variety, task identity and the task significance of maneuver worker’s job characteristics have obviously positive effect with job involvement. The other two job characteristics-autonomy and feedback were not supported in our hypotheses of research, yet could still provide a certain degree of predictability to job involvement.
