According to the statistics, grandparent families increase every year both locally and abroad. Children in the grandfamilies, face great physical, mental, and financial difficulties. Although the children were raised by grandparents, there were still some major problems. The grandparents face the new physical problem and financial responsibilities on the other hand, some of the children, encounter adjustment problems. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to investigate the differences of the children’s life adjustment among personal backgrounds, reasons of grandparenting and types of grandfamilies。 The target population for this study was the fifth and sixth grade students at primary schools in the northern Taiwan. Through purposive sampling, a total of three hundred and two students were investigated, and two hundred and two(86.8﹪) valid questionnaires were returned. The questionnaires included “Life Adjustment Scale of Grandchild” and “Personal Background Questionnaires”. Data were analyzed through SPSS for Windows by percentage, frequency, standard deviation, t — test, One — Way ANOVA, Scheffe’ method, Stepwise Multiple Regression, and content analysis. The results are as follows : (1) Most of the grandparent’ educational level was low. The majority graduated from elementary schools(40.3﹪)only. They compiled 43.1﹪of the primary caregivers of the children. The main reason for grandparents to raise grandchildren was " parents’absent for work"(51.5﹪). (2) "Life adjustment" of grandchildren was between "good" and "very good" (M=3.22 on four-point Likert scale). (3) Grandchildren’s life adjustment differed as a function of number of raising grandparents, grandparents economic status, and "reasons of grandparenting" . (4) The best predictors of "life adjustment" for children in grandfamilies were reasons of grandparenting, grandparents’ economic status, grandparents age, number of grandparents, and source of income. These predictors accounted for 14﹪of total variance. (5) Grandchild reported that "emotional problem" was the most serious problem they had. Based on the findings of this study, recommendations for " grandchild", "grandparents", "schools ","the puble",and "further studies"wewe provided respectively.
