It is heavily dependent upon the level of sow productivity, as measured by the number of pigs weaned per sow per year (PWSY). It has been noted that emphasized in increasing litter size and piglets survival rate can enhance the sow productivity. Pig herd productivity in Taiwan is relatively low in comparison of the result from annual report of PigCHAMP in 2000. Therefore, it is important to improve pig herd productivity in Taiwan. Sow productivity is the result of a complex of many factors including genetic, physiological and environmental factors, and further, integration of genetic and environmental information to assist producers for decision-making is required in order to improve pig herd productivity. Because of the rapid development of computer and telecommunication technologies, it is possible to integrate many management factors to develop professional programs to improve pig herd productivity. Many professional programs about reproduction management have been developed, but some of those are out of date as the information technology improved. Application of modern information technology to develop a professional program under the pig production environment in Taiwan is necessary to improve pig herd productivity. This study described the important factors influence the reproductive performance to identify the key management factors, and investigated the function and usage of the existed swine herd computer management systems in order to construct a knowledge base which contains relative factors and newly found biotechnological information to develop the information management system for pig herd productivity. The web based Pig Productive Information System (PPIS) was constructed under Microsoft 2000 Server environment using Access 2000 database via SQL languages and ASP to implement the dynamic web page query. The functions of the system was then verified using the productive data from a breeding herd of 500 sows in the northern Taiwan. The system consists of productive data management and expert diagnosis modules. Reproductive data were collected and analyzed by the system, and the productivity diagnosis modules were help managers to detect the key management factors and to provide the useful suggestions for problems solving. The system offers users to input data on line and to analyze the data to produce the necessary information for pig managers real-time.
