This research focuses on the mechanical behaviors of intersection between ventilator tunnel and main tunnel of eastern freeway in Taiwan. Both small and large ventilator tunnels connecting main tunnels are analyzed. The mechanisms for single side breakage and double side breakage from the main tunnel are investigated by using the three dimensional numerical code FLAC3D. The analytical results show that breakage construction may be the most dangerous period for intersection tunneling. The stresses in surrounding rock near top and bottom intersection boundary tends to release. The stress adjustment on special locations, such as top, bottom, left and right side of intersection boundary, are analyzed during tunneling. The stresses variation can be referred for similar tunneling.
