Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立臺灣科技大學 === 資訊管理系 === 91 === Existing commercial database management systems do not support storing or processing fuzzy data. In the existing database management systems, both data and queries must be crisp. However, many real life applications need to process data with some sorts of fuzzy concepts. As a result, a lot of research has been done on supporting fuzzy queries in the existing database management systems. The existing research has focused on providing flexible and semantically rich fuzzy queries. The efficiency of fuzzy query processing has drawn little attention. However, the efficiency of query processing in a fuzzy database is very important for the fuzzy database to be useful. In this thesis, we study the efficiency of evaluating a fuzzy equal-join operation. A fuzzy equal-join is an extension to the traditional equal-join by allowing different degrees of fuzziness in the definition of the equality operator. To expedite the processing of the fuzzy equal-join, we propose a new indexing technique called the fuzzy bitmap indexing. Through experiments, we show that the fuzzy bitmap indexing significantly reduces the time required in evaluating a fuzzy equal-join operation.
