This new machine for living, smart home, should utilize new technology of the information age, ubiquitous computing, to achieve new living in the information age. This thesis proposes smart homes to be characterized by four smart features: environment awareness, integrated automation, appropriate-prompt response, and anytime-anywhere communication. In addition, smart homes should fulfill new living requirements. Furthermore, the thesis selects two measures, smartness and ubiquitousness, to provide an overall evaluation of smart homes. To explore the issues of smart homes, the thesis identifies a model of smart homes. This model consists of social spaces, technological spaces and architectural spaces, where architectural spaces establish a framework to integrate social spaces and technological spaces. Reviews of recent research and experimental prototype studies show that existing smart home related investigations focus primarily on either social spaces or technological spaces, but few emphases are made from the perspective of architectural spaces. The vision of a new machine for living can only be accomplished when social spaces and technological spaces are fully integrated under architectural spaces. Therefore, this thesis proposes four design principles: modularity, variability, invisibility and flexibility. Following these principles, the thesis envisages a new generation of architects, who may integrate intelligence technologies with traditional living machine, to create new machines for living in the information age.
