Four of pioneer intolerant tree species, namely Taiwan acacia (Acacia confusa), Formosan alder (Alnus formosana), Taiwan zelkova (Zelkova serrata), and Indiacharcial trema (Trema orientalis) were tested. The seeds were mixed with 10 different proportions of medium materials to form the aggregate, while were loam soil, wood fiber, and peat. Then they were stored under 4 different storage durations. The germination performances were observed. Besides, the seeds were imbibed under different light intensities and water potentials, respectiuely, to observe the germination performance. The results showed that the germination of seed granules of Taiwan acacia, Formosan alder and Indiacharcial trema were lower than those of direct seeding. The hightest germination of seed granules of Taiwan zelkove was seed mixed with 100% loam soil and germination were declined with increasing storage duration. The ungerminated seeds in granules which storaged 3 weeks before examined were separated and reimbibeted. The germinations of Taiwan acacia seeds, excluding granule G, were lower than those of unstoraged granules. The similar results also abtained from those of Formosan alder, excluding treatment B, E, and F, and Taiwan zelkova, excluding treatment F. However, the influence of storage duration on germination of Indiacharcial trema seeds, excluding treatment A and G, was not significant. The germination of Taiwan acacia, Formosan alder and Indiacharcial trema seeds were increased with the increase of light intensity and were highest in 150μmol/m2s-1 and sun light. The light is essential for germination of Formosan alder seeds while Taiwan zelkova seeds are converse. The germination of all 4 tested species decreased with the diminished water potential. And only the seeds of Taiwan acacia, maintained their germination in -0.5MPa. these results indicated that Taiwan acacia was more drought resistant than others.
