The first part discusses the investment development in Indonesia. The next part describes the economic development of Taiwan, especially in terms of its outward investment. The third part discusses the bilateral relationship between the two countries in terms of investment and trade. The first part explains the investment environment in Indonesia which includes the geographic location of the country and its rich natural resources. Besides, this part also describes the economic development of Indonesia, especially in terms of trade and investment. It also sheds some light on the investment environment in Indonesia as well as incentives provided by the Indonesian government to attract foreign investors. The second part discusses the economic development of Taiwan. Though the country is not rich in natural resources, it has the power to build its economy to become one of “the four dragons in Asia” after Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Korea. But due to the increasing intensity of global competition, the government of Taiwan has created some policies to encourage its enterprises to invest abroad, especially to Southeast Asian countries. This part of the thesis also discusses the challenges that Taiwanese enterprises face in their efforts to invest in Indonesia as well as other Southeast Asia countries. The third part of the thesis discusses the bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Taiwan, which is Indonesia’s 14th biggest trade partner and its 5th largest partner in investment. This part particularly covers Taiwan’s investment development in Indonesia which has significantly decreased after the monetary crisis that hit the Southeast Asian countries. The next section of the thesis tries to describe what the Indonesian government has done to grab the opportunities offered by the Taiwan’s government through its “Go South Policy”.
