At the time series station (KK1) in South China Sea, TDS concentration ranged from 0.2~3.5 nM in surface water, with subsurface maximum of 1.5~5.5 nM at depth of about slightly deeper than the Chlorophyll-a concentration maximum, suggesting in-situ production of TDS through biological activities. TDS concentration increased significantly in depth around 500 meter then decreased with increasing depth, indicating possible horizontal transport processes. It appeared not as previously believed, co-existed at the same depth, TDS subsurface maximum were found below what Chlorophyll subsurface maximum depth. In addition, apparent diel variation of TDS concentrations in the surface water layer were also clearly evident from other results of this work (the 24-h observation station in Hungtzai Trough), with maximum TDS concentration was found just prior to sunrise. Suggesting possible production through bacterial activities and degradation by photo-oxidation. Not as appeared in the open oceans, total dissolved sulfide concentrations in East China Sea at these stations were relatively more uniform. These results may suggest that TDS concentrations in coastal area are relatively uniform and mainly controlled by the degree of mixing in addition to that of surface biological productivity, organic particle degradation, photolization, and with the Yangtze River and the Taiwan Strait waters. Further detail speciation studies and field investigations are necessary in order to deduce processes that influence production/regeneration of total dissolved sulfides through plankton/bacterial activities and other physical chemical reaction.
