Population parameters and preference of Liriomyza sativae (Blanchard) and L. trifolii (Burgess) on sunflower, tomato and Kidney bean

The intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was biggest at 0.2432, when L. trifolii was reared on sunflower at 28℃ and lowest at 0.0912, when L. trifolii was reared on tomato at 24℃. The mean generation time (T) was shortest at15.6 days, when L. sativae was reared on sunflower at 32℃ and longest at 27.8 days, when L. trifolii was reared on tomato at 24℃. The doubling time (D.T.) was largest at 7.6 days and shortest at 2.9 days, when L. trifolii was reared on tomato at 24℃ and bean at 28℃, respectively. The population parameters for the two leafminer species were different on different crops at different temperatures, indicating their different reproductive potentials on different crops at different temperatures. Based on the life tables, the most suitable host for both leafminer species was Kidney bean. However judging from the number of stipples on the host leaves, the females of both species preferred sunflower over other crops with 50.5 stipples for L. trifolii and 80.4 stipples for L. sativae. Tomato was the least preference by L. trifolii with only 6.6 sitpples. However, L. sativae did not show any significant preference between Kidney bean and tomato as each received 9.6 and 16.1 stipples respectively. However, with regard to the number of eggs laid on leaves, there was no significant difference among three crops, indicating that no correlation existed between feeding preference and egg-laying.
