Feasibility and advantages of strain sensing system with FBG was verified by way of putting optical sensors in use practically. Furthermore, new strain-based optical sensors were invented to monitor the variation of angular inclination and scouring depth of bridge columns, and feasibilities of both devices were put to the proof via experiment. The results presented here have demonstrated that FBG sensors are a viable means for monitoring the structural health to avoid the engineering accident. Namely, FBG sensors are more applicable than traditional RSG sensors as sensing components in surveillance system. Afterward, various kinds of optical sensing instruments in groups can be arranged the so-called smart bridge monitoring system. Besides, the standard or norm with regard to monitoring systems and instruments should be draw up in Taiwan. So as to look forward to optical fiber sensing systems can be popularized and applied to the practical structure and bridge with the combination of fiber optical communication simultaneously in the future.
