Summary: | 碩士 === 國立台北師範學院 === 國民教育研究所 === 91 === In recent years, most studies of Yu-hsien Teng put their emphasis on the collection of Teng’s personal history and individual works. These studies seldom put their efforts on probing the heart of Teng’s music. Therefore, this study focused itself on Teng’s music, exploring the characteristics of Teng’s works and studying the musicalization of the works’ lyrics. Descriptions of Teng’s time and life stories were implemented to help explain the characteristics of his works. Furthermore, the researcher discussed the influence of Teng’s works on music education in Taiwan as well as his contribution to Taiwan’s musical arena.
The conclusions of this study are stated as follows:
Yu-hsien Teng was born in a family of sinology. He had been to Japan to further his music studies. No matter being a song writer or a music teacher, he had never stopped composing music and writing songs. As one of his musical styles, he integrated the characteristics of Chinese music and western music together in his music. Also, he was extremely good at applying the techniques of “contrast” and “variations within unity” into the music he composed to form the beauty of his music. Because he harmoniously combined the rhythms, tones, and rhymes of Taiwanese into his music, he made his songs such as -- Craving for Wind of Spring, Four Seasons, Moonlight Sorrow, and Song of a Spring Night─easy to follow with and gave them the touch of folk music. Besides, out of his intense love to his home-land revealed in his works, his songs are beloved and taught at schools of all levels. Thus, they have a strong influence over the students and play an irreplaceable role in music education in Taiwan.
Yu-hsien Teng’s field study of folk music and his national consciousness
in his music make him regarded as a scholar of folk music. He not only effortlessly promoted the folk cultures of his time, winning the praise of Pien Kang Yen, a renowned Japanese scholar, but also evoked reflections on the roles of music and culture elites by devoting himself whole-heartedly to music with his rich capabilities and a sense of mission. Hence, the evaluation of his historical status should be multidimensional.
