It means that the problem is very complex and they have no way of resolving it, they do not even understand a small part of it. This expression reflects how many French people view the Chinese language, particularly the Chinese characters : as an inaccessible writing system. Generally, if a language is very different from somebody’s mother tongue it will be very difficult to learn. This thesis is trying to reduce the gap between the French student and the Chinese language by proposing interactive activities at the introductory level. We chose to use the Internet as the teaching material support because of its practical aspect : with the Internet, the student can have Chinese classes whenever he or she wants and from any location. The student can also study at his or her own pace. The students for whom this website was created are French adults ; it was not only created for students who want to start Chinese but also for people who are curious about the Chinese language and want to have a first introductory understanding of the language. During the conception of this website, we paid particular attention to the interactivity and playful aspect of the pedagogical activities, with the aim of reducing any foreign sentiment felt toward the Chinese language. This thesis has six chapters : Chapter one presents the reasons behind the choice of subject, the objectives and the area of study. In chapter two, we try to understand Chinese teaching in France and we discuss the possible pedagogical content of a Chinese course at the introductory level. Chapter three takes stock of the current situation of digital Chinese teaching materials, like Chinese teaching websites and CD-Roms. In chapter four, we explain the basic principles for the conception of this website, the pedagogical content, and the elaboration of the pedagogical activities. Chapter five presents the model of the website and describes in detail the pedagogical activities.
