Being two traditional settlements founded on farming and fishing along the South-Western seashore of Taiwan, there was a degree of resemblance between the two settlements on the aspects of the geographical environments and the locations. The history of the developments of the two settlements can be traced back to the early years of Chin Dynasty. This thesis is to explore and compare the developments of these two settlements from the perspectives of “man” and “land”. “Si-Su” used to be called “Six Qen-Sen” and “Wanli” “Seven Qen-Sen.” Studying the names used in old time for the two settlements helps to learn more about their landforms and locations. In the very beginning, the scales of the two settlements had been similar. However, later, because of the location of the graveyard in each settlement, Wanli was left more space for further development, which was an advantage for the development of a settlement. As for the growth of the population, the birth rate and the decease rate of the two settlements were quite steady. The increase and the decrease of the population, therefore, was mostly influenced by people flow. Once, the number of the residents in Si-Su increased greatly because lots of new residence was built there. But soon, the number declined. At the very same time when people moved into Si-Su, the population of Wanli also grew in a large scale. Afterwards, because new transportation network brought in new residence areas, the number of the residents continued to grow. New constructions in Si-Su were mostly located on the lands which had been formerly used as fish-ponds. For Wanli, they were around the settlement itself, especially along the two sides of the transportation network implanted later. Observed from the structure of patriarchal clan, most people in Si-Su have the same surname — Tsai. In Wanli ,different major surnames are distributed in several areas.
