碩士 === 臺南師範學院 === 鄉土文化研究所 === 91 === The Worship Ceremony of Wang Boat is one of major folk custom in southwest coastal area in Taiwan. This custom has been introduced to Taiwan by immigration and drifty Wang Boat form original family in Mainland China. Considering these limitations of rules and geographical environment, constituent elements of original folk culture have been selected to comprise the self Worship Ceremony of Wang Boat in Taiwan. Wan-Li located on the estuary of Erhin River and the climate is moist and hot, plague frequently caused desperate death in Wan-Li due to it’s environment. The increasing amount of the temples and gods ostensibly reflects prevalent animism. The worship gods in Wan-Li comprise consanguineous gods, gods from meeting one''s death, and gods from driftage. To get rid off plagues in the same case in traditional Chinese culture, people believe that it will improve the environment. But the custom of sending off Plagues developed in cultural content of the ceremony in Wan-Li . The custom of “Wang Boat patrolling on behalf of the heaven” in Wai-Nian-Dian, Wan-Li, not only reflects historical backgrounds of interpersonal relationships between Wan-Li and neighborhoods, but also describes social functions of interpersonal relationships. Wang Boat marching in some areas of Tainan City, Tainan Country, and Kaohsiung Country causes the diffusion of the ceremony in the areas along Erhin River. As in the local smaller temples in Wan-Li, the Worship Ceremony of Wang Boat is one of the important indicators to demarcate local groups. By celebrating the Ceremony of Wang Boat, these temples build the economical association to agree social status of temples without historical backgrounds.
