Electrical technology is a rapidly changing industry in the past years , the well known international computer brand companies use newly technology to prompt the customer’s consuming wish. The life cycle of computer product shorten, sales management even tougher and market needing trend unstable, the gross profit margin shrink badly even make a loss. The brand companies has to outsource less profitable operations which are included manufacturing, logistics and after service to focus on brand marketing and product developing core competence. Those above reasons cause the manufacturing pattern of Information Technology industry change from vertical integration to diversity. The Electronics Manufacturing Service (EMS) providers are rised under this trend.
This article aims to study how Taiwan’s Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs)/Original Equipment Manufacturers’ (OEMs) strategies under such environment. From the research we found the international EMS providers strength on manufacturing technology, economics of scope, economics of scale and global operation but Taiwan’s ODM/OEM providers is good at product developing, manufacturing technology and integrated component supply chain.
After evaluating the strength and weakness of Taiwan OMD/OEM providers, here we would like to suggest them to develop professional Design Electronics Manufacturing Service (DEMS) and the strategies shall firstly focus on existing computer related products then offer the overall lower cost and provide End to End total solution to OEM customers. On the other hand, the companies should establish its specific core competence and make the factory as OEM customer’s “Virtual Factory” in order to fulfill OEM customer’s highest satisfaction.
