Finite element analysis (FEA) and experimental modal analysis (EMA) are adopted to characterize the dynamic properties of free-free bolt-jointed plate structure. Three methods, including the mode shape difference method, the slope of mode shape difference method and the strain energy method, are developed and applied to detect the untighten bolted location on the bolt-jointed plate. The structural model verification of bolt-jointed plate structure is performed. The system modal parameters including natural frequencies, mode shapes and frequency response function(FRF) can then be validated. Results show the less tighten levels of bolted plate reveal lower natural frequencies. The variation of mode shapes among different tighten levels of bolts are also observed. Both the numerical and experimental prediction of untighten bolt location are presented to show the effectiveness of the prediction method.
