The study took place at the towns of Ling Pieng and Shin Pin, Ping Tong shien, during the summer months of 2002. Thirty women joined the study. It was began by teaching basic concepts of nutritional science, such as basic food groups, caloric conversion, and techniques in making meals low in calories. First stage of the study involved restricting food intake to 1200kcal/day for these thirty women. They were instructed to consume tomato as part of their diet, however, they were allowed to fluctuate tomato consumption from day to day. From the period of time between 2002/7/9 to 2002/8/19 the students were required to consume and record the amount of tomato taken daily, while keeping the daily maximum caloric restriction. At the end of 42 days, the Group I (defined as those who lost weight between 1 to 2.9 kg) consumed on the average 9.05gm of tomato per day. Group II (3 to 4.9kg weight loss) consumed average amount of 13.27gm of tomato daily. Group III (5 to 6.9 kg weight loss) consumed 41.37gm of tomato daily. Group IV (7 to 8.9kg weight loss) consumed 42.26gm of tomato daily. It was summarized that the body weight loss increased with increased tomato intake. Second stage of the study involved two groups of women, both allowed to consume up to 1500 kcal/day but must include tomato in their diet. One group is allowed to take sweet and fried food, while the other group was instructed to avoid sweet and fried food. The group that avoided sweet and fried food lost about 2.2kg of body weight. The group that was allowed to consume sweet and fried food had more significant decrease of body fat of 1.43%. In conclusion, with low caloric intake of 1200kcal/day, daily consumption of 42gm of tomato is sufficient in assisting weight loss. However, when daily caloric intake is allowed to increase to 1500kcal/day, daily tomato intake must be raised to 300-400gm in order to achieve substantial body weight loss. 黃卓治 2003 學位論文 ; thesis zh-TW
