Summary: | 碩士 === 國立高雄師範大學 === 特殊教育學系 === 91 === This study was designed to investigate the contributing factors associated with reading abilities in deaf college students or graduates by means of the interview methodology. The deaf individuals, families and peers were subjects of this study. The results indicated that only two of the nine deaf subjects reached the senior-high level on the reading measure, outperforming the other seven subjects who attained junior-high and elementary levels. The notion that deaf students are underachievers in reading was confirmed with these results. In addition, we identified eight factors that might have contributed to the reading abilities in the deaf adults; they are, respectively, frequent interactions with relatives, positive reading atmosphere at home, parent-child reading together, intensive language practice at home, regular classroom placement, extensive reading, habitual use of hearing aid, and assertive and outgoing personality. These factors were presented as tentative and discussed in the educational and research contexts.
