IBI not only is intended to facilitate assessments of urban parks from bird species assemblage data but also provide a good evaluation system for park management and future researches. Each 24 sampling park’s area is larger than 3 ha and bird surveyed in the winter migratory season from Nov. 2002 to Feb 2003, and the breeding season from Apr. to June 2003. Developing IBI was made progress in three stages to evaluate parks’ condition, and screen candidate metrics that defined as avian communities of urban parks. Firstly, a simple linear regression relationship of each metrics of the criterion park, Shou-Shan Natural Park, on natural log number of sampling site was calculated. Five significant correlations in the winter migratory season and four in the breeding season were found. Then, the individual metrics of all sampling parks could be ranked by the maximum species richness lines, which were come from regression formulas. Secondly, the remnant candidate metrics was applied by cluster analysis and the three categories, or clusters, were confirmed by one-way ANOVA with Duncan’s test. Only the diet guild in the breeding season was screened out. Finally, the other remnant metrics, densities of proportion of tolerant species and proportion of alien species number, were directly trisected by the difference between maximum and minimum. In conclusion, there are totally 7 screening metrics, which were the same as in the winter migratory season as in the breeding season, except substitute the number of migratory species of diet guild. The difference of total metrics scores separated equally in five sections, which also represent five conditions of avian communities in the urban parks as excellent, good, fair, poor, and very poor. To evaluate the relationship among 7 metrics of 24 urban parks, significant relationships calculated by Kendall coefficient of concordance (α=0.05) were found in the both winter migratory season and breeding season. By Spearman’s rank correlation among metrics’ scores and total metric scores of IBI, species richness, diversity, evenness and 8 environmental variables, IBI in the breeding season significantly correlated with 6 environmental variables and was more suitable to assess the urban parks of southern Taiwan.
