The aim of the study was to explore the effects of video-based antenatal education for planned Cesarean birth. A two-group quasi-experimental design was employed. The convenience sampling of 64 women who planned Cesarean birth participated in this study. The 64 subjects were divided into two groups: an experimental group (n=31) and control group (n=33). Three instruments were employed: Knowledge Scale of Cesarean Birth, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Cesarean Birth Self-Efficacy Scale. The data was analyzed using SPSS/PC software, including Chi-Square test, Student’s t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test, Pearson correlation, One-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis test.
The findings of this study were: (1) the experimental group had more knowledge of Cesarean birth and its increase was more significant;( 2) the experimental group had less antenatal anxiety and emotion relaxation was more significant; (3) the experimental group had higher self-efficacy during antenatal and Cesarean periods, the improvement of self-efficacy was significant to control group; (4) positive correlation of knowledge to self-efficacy, negative correlations of knowledge to antenatal anxiety and antenatal anxiety to self-efficacy were found; (5) some factors effected the knowledge of Cesarean birth, including maternal occupation, gravida, experience, frequency, interval, and cause of Cesarean birth, source of knowledge, and frequency of VCD education; (6) Cesarean birth experience and frequency modified antenatal anxiety; (7) maternal self-efficacy was modified by gravida, Cesarean birth experience, frequency, interval, and cause, desired neonatal gender, source of knowledge, anesthesia type, neonatal abnormalities, and frequency of VCD education.
Based on study results, the video-based antenatal education was suggested helpful to educate women who planed Cesarean birth. This method was expected to reduce antenatal anxiety and enhance self-efficacy; furthermore, these women may have chance to gain positive experience of Cesarean birth.
Key words:
