First, to examine three female environmental organization leaders’ actions in the Hualien area, and their significant life experience in developing those actions; Second, to analyze the components of their successful environmental actions; Finally, to investigate the sources of hope and inspiration that the leaders draw on. Interview, participant observation and documents collection are main methods for this research. This study first generalized some significant life experience categories of the leaders’, which include: experiences of nature areas, returning to hometown, negative experiences, family, friends, organizations, sense of social justice, concern for children/grandchildren, principles, and admiration for literature. This study also discovered several essential factors for a successful environmental action: to be well informed about issues, to join an organization, to be politically active, to conserve yourself, to be patient/persistent, to use the media, to build a broad base of support, to use elastic action skill, to take legal action, to adopt pliable communication skill, and to treasure the land. In addition, the following sources of hope were found in this study, which the leaders draw on: the nature world, the support of colleagues and friends, the feedbacks came from previous efforts, the environmentalists who never give up, positive attitude, the sense of responsibility for the environment, and the concern for land and human beings. According to the research results, this study finally presented fundamental suggestions for the development of environmental education in Hualien area.
