The questionnaire is self – administered and mailed to the visiting physicians , resident physicians , physician assistants and nurses .The response rate of our questionnaire is 49.27%( Valid : 457/ Total : 920 ). Important findings are as follow : 1.The system of physician assistants : Most subjects ( 95.2% ) response that there are physician assistants in their hospitals. 89.6% response that there are specific unit in charge of physician assistants. 95.2% consider that physician assistants should pass the examination of license. 80.1% consider that both physician assistants and physician should take the responsibility in law. 96.5% consider that to be a physician assistant should have a clinical experience for nursing care and 43.5% have a bachelor degree of medical science at least. 39.6% consider that physician assistants practice well for working 1-2 years at least. 2.Physician assistants and their duties : The subjects trend to agree with the duties for physician assistants list on the questionnaire include physical examinations and history survey and recording chart and intensive condition for the patient , notify the visiting doctor when abnormal laboratory data and emergence occurs , care on critical patient , planning for discharge , round the ward together with the visiting doctor , screen the medical data of patients for visiting doctor , support documentation and searching information for the visiting doctor , contact and arrange special examinations for patients , engaged in the discussion of special lecture or seminar , medical science consultant for patients , medical quality control , injection for intra- veinous , blood sampling for artery blood gas , wound care and medication , wound discharge culture , suture extraction , together with on critical patient when examined , foley catheter insertion for male patient , drainage extraction and support the continuous education of nurse department. The subjects trend to disagree : ACLS , bedside wound debridement , CVP insertion , lumbar puncture and on endotracheal tube . 3.Physician assistants and medical quality : The subjects trend to agree on : improve for the patients’ health , helpful for preventing from chronic disease , adequate and real-time for care , informative for diagnosis and treatment in hospitalization , care the patients with physical and emotional view , care for the patients by sufficient medical science and helpful for complete the record.
