The Exploration of the Mind-A Study for A-Ling Chen’ s Ink Paintings
The study is based on several philosophical ideas, which includes the Taoist thoughts, S. Freud’s sub-consciousness theory, C. G. Jung’s collective sub-consciousness model and the men-heaven-in-one thinking in Zen, to analyze the issue of mind in my ink art works. As for a methodological concern, I utilized critical theory approach, philosophical analysis, art-historic view and qualitative thinking approach to accomplish this thesis.
As for the composition of theories, and the production of the series, the study investigates theories from esthetics, art psychology, art therapy and art history, Combined with my personal experiences of life and reflections over art creating, the study concludes four phases in “The Exploration of the Mind” as below: (a) release of instinctual drive: disclouse of id and relief of the mind, (b) reflections of the mind : self-comprehension, (c) emotion adjustment: self-clarification, and(d) expression of the essence of life: freeing self-mind and revealing the spiritual.
According to these four phases of my ink paintings, the study concentrated on rocks, heads and masks as the symbols channeling through the personal spirit. Besides, with varied ways of expressions, such as concrete, abstract, symbolic, and metaphor as well as installation with spatial atmosphere, I chose ink as a main medium to reveal the spiritual world. Regarding the techniques, I applied ink skills, virtual-actual composition, accompanied with some photo sketching, automatic technique, frame-cutting and surrealist combination.
In other words, the purpose of the study are:
a. to analyze the theoies of mind and their relevance to artistic production .
b. to develop the idea of the series of works based the mind Based on art theories and personal experiences in art and life.
c. to produce the series of works through the reflection and development of ideas and practices.
d. to interpret the three sub-series: (a)release of instinctual drive-rock images , (b)reflections of he mind and emotion adjustment-mask images, and (c)expression of the essence of life-peace and free images, in terms of ideas, content and subject, form and techniques, as well as whole expression.
e. to provide ideas of direction for future personal artistic production, based on the above.
The researcher come to some conclusions and get reflections after the dialogue between theory and practice in the study. They are as follows:
a. Confronted with the objective , human mind goes through the various experiences. The process of experiences is the relections and the growing process of the mind.
b. Although the levels of mind can be dicrided in different ways, the researcher tends to stress on the levels of sub-consciousness, consciousness, and transcendent consciousness. The researcher thinks artistic production is the freeing of instinctual drive sub-consciousness , the freeing of conciousness, and the free operation and transformation by the transcendent consciousness.
c. The signs and symbols of the paintings are the creation of the artist. The uniqueness of personal creation is valuable. And this uniqueness is artually comes from the individual experiences of life and nature, and from the artistic transformation of such experiences.
d. The ideas and vitality of art is derived from the mind and self true nature. Back to the essence and the free nature of life is the most valuable part of art.
e. The artist will gain peaceful and tranquil state of mind if the images are created through the proper integration of the sub-consciousness, consciousness, and transcendent consciousness.
