It has been successfully applied in many applications, such as European digital broadcast radio system, digital television video (DTV), and wireless local area network (WLAN). In this thesis, the issue of packet detection, frequency offset estimation and frame synchronization for the physical layer of the IEEE OFDM WLAN system is investigated. New performance analysis is performed for packet detection and frequency offset estimation, respectively, and simulation results show that the analytic results agree very well with these of simulations for both AWGN and multi-path fading channels. In addition, new methods for frame synchronization are proposed that significantly outperform the traditional ones, especially in the multi-path fading environment.
