By exploiting the orthogonality characteristic of OFDM systems, unused sub-channels called virtual sub-carriers are used to form the CFO estimator. By proper selection of the virtual sub-carriers, the associated CFO estimation range can expand the entire sub-carriers frequency range. Instead of exhaustive search over the entire uncertainty range for the CFO estimate, an efficient iterative algorithm to locate the CFO is proposed.
