Abstract
The purpose of this research is to understand how the cancer clients learn to get along with their disease, and explore their resilience in their adaptation, as well as how their resilience affects their future life. By using the method of the depth interview of the qualitative research for data collection. After the interviews, researcher carefully analyzed the collected data and attempted to find out the differences and the similarities among the three cancers clients. The study results are as followed:
1.How the cancer clients adjust their life adaptation includes: negative emotion, emotional control, self adjustment, cherishing oneself, open-mindedness, empathy, contemplating upon the life, peaceful feeling, and positive living.
2.The resilient factors of the clients include: fortitude, empathy, optimism, social support, removal of the risky factors, self-encouragement, hope, relaxation, resource seeking, religious belief, and humor.
3.The effects of the clients’ resilience upon their future life include: sense of the well-being, empathy, facing the death bravely, a grateful mind, becoming more positive, caring for other people, valuing his or her life, and seizing the day.
Suggestions and recommendations of this study are discussed in this thesis, with my hope that it would be helpful to other cancer clients, professional social workers, and the researchers in the future.
