And try to outline the required elements of professional competence. Questionnaire survey method is adopted and study subjects were protection service social workers from the statutory and private sectors, and the instructors who teach protection subjects in social work department. This study sent out 918 questionnaires with 369 completed the survey. The response rate was 40.2%. Based on statistical data analyses, the study findings are as follows: 1. Both the protection service workers and instructors highly identified with the social work values. 2.Protection service workers emphasized more on practical knowledge and skills relevant to their jobs; however, instructors focused more on the basic social work knowledge and helping skills. 3.The level of protection workers’ competence when graduated from college correlated with the courses they took at school and field placement experiences. 4.The degree of identification with social work competence associated with number of the protection workers in the agency, agency characteristics (statutory vs. private), provided services and target population. 5.The level of protection service workers’ identification with social work values correlated with workers’ age, fields of service (academia vs. practice), agency characteristics and target population. 6.The level of protection service workers’ identification with social work knowledge associated with their agency characteristics, and target population. 7. The level of protection service workers’ identification with social work skill associated with the number of protection workers in the agency and agency characteristics. 8. The major differences between academia and practitioners were on the level of identification with social work value. The differences between the two on social work knowledge and skills were not significant. Based on these findings, this study outlines the following suggestions: 1.Schools education should encourage students to take courses related to protection service and take filed placement in protection service area to equip their protection service competence. Agency may take into account applicants’ school course work and practicum while recruiting personnel. 2.Supervisors should communicate with social workers about the content of social work professional competence to avoid the value conflict. 3.Protection service institutions may provide more on-job training to make up the inadequacy of school education. 4.Schools may consider the suggestions made by the protection service workers to enhance school education. By doing so, school would prepare students with better professional competency. 5.To increase the transaction between academia and practitioners to enhance mutual understanding and cooperation, so that the cognition gap between them could be shortened. 6. Future research may adopt qualitative approach to further explore the predictors of protection service workers’ identification with professional competence, which is one of the limitations of this study.
