The research subject in this article is China brides in a place called “Chin Men” Hsien. An in-depth interview and a personal observation is used to research the marriage adaptable process of those married in-migrants in the area of Chin Men. The major research has following findings on their marriage adaptability -
GOOD ADAPTABILITY
1. Couple’s harmonious feeling: The husband and the wife show mutual understanding, concern and support each other. These are the props of their happiness. The couple have same concept. Besides, after they married, they have children in whom she can repose her heart.
2. Well-to-do financial standing: The husband has his own house. He runs his own business well, or works for others, and has a stable income. The bride doesn’t need to work outside in order to share responsibility of family expenditure.
3. A personality of willpower: She has a strong adaptability, and is very independent. She can bear hardship. Her original living conditions in China is inferior to the living conditions of her current husband. Therefore, she can bear hardship and blame. She can join herself into a new environment quickly.
4. Same customs in south Fu-Chien province: A majority of China brides living in Chin Men come from Fu-Chien province. Chin Men belongs to south Fu-Chien coastal areas. They have a high degree similarity of nature. Besides, their dialects, diets and customs are much similar. Those brides in-migrated to Chin Men have less adaptable obstacles.
5. Convenient trial navigation: Because of the convenience of a trial navigation between Chin Men and Xiamen, China brides can return her parents’ homes quickly and conveniently, and save traveling expenses. When they miss home, they can return their parents’ homes quickly through 3 minor navigations for adapting their moods.
BAD ADAPTABILITY
1. Unfamiliar with place and people: It is the 1st time she comes to Chin Men. The husband and all his family members work outside. She is left alone at home. Her social circle has a certain degree of being sealed. At the beginning she feels “no-companion”, and can not get used to this new life. This feeling usually lasts for 6 months or one year.
2. Languages and Words: She cannot completely read or write complicated Chinese characters. She needs a period of time to learn it. The bride who comes from the province other than Fu-Chien province cannot either listen to or speak Taiwan dialect. She also needs a period of time to learn it. She has more communication problem with the old father and the old mother in husband’s family.
3. Relationship between daughter-in-law and mother-in-law: The husband’s parents still lead the family, and master the family economy. It makes the male title role and the female title role in the marriage lack self-discretion and independence. It is likely to have a generation gap between daughter-in-law and mother-in-law.
4. Family finance not good enough: The husband’s family is not good enough on finance. The working income is not stable, and she cannot go out to work to make up a financial deficiency for the family.
5. Settlement and household register: It takes many years to get an identification card. Besides, the application procedure is very complicated. Before she get the ID card, she cannot enjoy the rights equally. An appeal to have an ID card is the common heartfelt wish.
In general, the adaptability period takes about one year. A bad adaptability depends on the difference of family background and husband’s character. However, the general commonality is an anticipation and appeal to a looser restrictions of the laws and the decrees. What is closely linked to her is a “working permit” and “household register for settlement” — two important topics of debate. Therefore, I bring up a relevant suggestion on the laws, the decrees, the policies as well as administrative counsel according to my research and the findings.
