Abstract
In recent years, traditional media firm has started expanding its business scope towards the Internet services. It causes many new challenges and impact on the "old" clan. Now the question is: Should these “traditional” media attach more importance on the existing businesses or on the internet business? Between the new and traditional media, how to integrate the strengths and create resources becomes a challenge for entrepreneurs.
Reviewing previous research, most studies related to the field of internet resources and strategies are mostly targeted on e-commerce, lack of studies focused on news websites. Therefore, based on resource theories and Porter’s three generic strategies─overall cost leadership, differentiation, and focus, this research is attempted to analysis the three major news websites providing by three news groups in Taiwan, i.e. Udn.com (United Daily News Group), Chinatime.com (China Times Group) and Ettoday.com (Eastern Group).
The aims of this research are three:
1. To investigate the influential factors of news website resources, strategies and performances and compare the differences among three media groups.
2. To explore the relationships among resources, strategies and performance.
3. To analyze the most appropriate strategies and models for operators. .
A questionnaire was undertaken to survey the managerial staff of the three news websites. The results show that there are significant differences among three news websites. Chinatimes.com and Udn.com are operating by newspaper groups, have similar resources. But there are insignificant in terms of strategies. Ettoday.com providing by the cross-media operator, Eastern group has significant differences compared with Chinatimes.com and Udn .com. The results of correlations show that there are significant relationships among resources, strategies and performances, the website has more resources and appropriate strategies, its performances are better than others.
