Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology is developed to support tremendous bandwidth to meet the rapidly growing traffic in Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN). In the commercial DWDM communication system, the channel bandwidth of has reached to OC-768 (40Gb/s) and the total bandwidth of an optical fiber exceeds 20 Tb/s. At present, the conversion speed of optical-electronic is the major factor to slow down the transmission rate of DWDM network. Because of optical switch immature, the present DWDM network almost operates with SONET/SDH which is low channel utilization and inefficient under the burst-natured data-traffic. This thesis proposes a novel IP-over-DWDM MAN ring network architecture that supports all-optical transmission and Quality of Service (QoS). A new Media Access Control (MAC) protocol for this network named CSMA/CP (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Carrier Preemption) is used to directly transport variable size IP packets on the DWDM ring network without encapsulating IP packets to SONET; it improves the transport efficiency of network. In addition, this network also provides the survivability function to increase reliability for restoring any node or fiber failures. In the thesis, the system model of the network is built, analyzed, and simulated. Simulation results show the proposed MAC protocol is able to take higher node throughput and lower packet latency. Finally, the QoS mechanism is added for this system to support Differentiated Services (DiffServ). Wen-Shyang Hwang 黃文祥 2004 學位論文 ; thesis 84 zh-TW
