There are limited studies on the relation between oral health and general health condition. The purpose of this study was to understand the relation between oral health and general health condition and to investigate whether people would have the same level in concerning general health condition as well as oral health. The 177 study samples were selected from people who came for a general health examination in one of the Municipal Hospitals in Kaohsiung from Dec. 2001 to June 2002. The relation between oral health and general health condition was analyzed with SPSS statistic utility. The result showed the relation between general health and sex. Total bilirubin and uric acid were higher in men than in women. The value was 25.0% in men and 10.15% in women, p<0.0104 for total bilirubin and 13.89% in men and 2.89% in women, p<0.0113 for uric acid. In the relation between age and general health, there was a significant difference in after meal blood sugar and BUN. In general, people aged over 60 had a higher percentage of abnormality (45.45%). Twenty-four percent of people in the 71-80age-group, were abnormal in after meal blood sugar. The tendency was toward an increase with age. And prosthetic condition, periodontal attachment and missing teeth were worse as age increased. As for the relation between oral condition and general health, there was a statistically significant difference in the relation between the periodontal condition and the before meal blood sugar level as well as cholesterol value. Via periodontal disease assessment, the ratio of periodontal health was 2.10% in the abnormal blood sugar level group, but it was 14.04% in the normal blood sugar group. The ratio of periodontal probing depth 4-5mm was 33.28% in the abnormal blood sugar level group while it was 17.28% in the normal blood sugar group (p<0.0000). The distributions of attachment loss in abnormal blood sugar level group were 27.14% for 6-8mm and 2.1% for 9-11mm, while 7.8% for 6-8mm and none of them had >9mm in the normal blood sugar group (p<0.0001). It showed heat the abnormal blood sugar group had severe probing depth as well as attachment loss. The data also showed 27.10% and 8.42% of the abnormal cholesterol group had 4-5mm and 6mm probing depth while 14.29% and 4.28% in the normal cholesterol group (p<0.0082). There were statistic differences of prosthetical need between abnormal and normal blood sugar before meals, 6.25% and 18.6% respectively (p<0.0421), or between abnormal and normal total cholesterol, 24.29% and 9.35% respectively (p<0.0219). The ratio of poor prosthetics was 17.14% the abnormal total cholesterol group and 11.21% in the normal cholesterol group (p<0.0265). TM joint disorder was 16.67% in the abnormal TG group and 6.67% in the normal TG group (p<0.0413). The mean missing teeth was 9.30 (+_8.25) in the abnormal hepatitis C group, and 4.29 (+_5.29) in the non-hepatitis C group (p<0.0091). The mean missing teeth was 6.96 (+_8.54) in self-awareness of disease and 4.23 (+_5.22) in self-awareness of normal (p<0.0283). The mean missing teeth was 2.53 (+_2.78) in the abnormal bilirubin group and 5.13 (+_6.30) in the normal bilirubin group (p<0.0203). The mean filled teeth rate was 3.79 (+_4.71) in the abnormal bilirubin group and 2.22 (+_3.17) in the normal group (p<0.0202). 8.93% of the abnormal lung function group had mucosal abnormality, while only 1.65% of the normal lung function group suffered mucosal abnormality (p<0.0203).
