Under knowledge economy, people are tempted to know how to apply knowledge for creating or accumulating competitive advantage. Compare with stable environment that emphasis efficiency such as cost and speed etc., knowledge economy emphasis not only efficiency but also elasticity. In the other words, an enterprise must hanker efficiency and elasticity concurrently in order to survive. Then knowledge power can help to do that. Forby, creating profit is always an important mission for management, and cooper argued that an enterprise’s source of profit could be obtained from new product development (NPD). So we will base on knowledge creation for theoretical framework and discuss how to influence the performance of NPD. We argue that a NPD team’s organizational learning capabilities and situations of knowledge creation will influence the execution of knowledge creation mechanism. Then, the execution of knowledge creation mechanism will also influence the performance of NPD. Finally, the characteristic of knowledge is a moderator in our theoretical framework.
So, our main questions include: in a NPD team (1) how organizational learning capabilities influence the execution of knowledge creation mechanism? (2) how situations of knowledge creation influence the execution of knowledge creation mechanism? (3) how the execution of knowledge creation mechanism influence the performance of NPD? (4) which role dose the characteristic of knowledge play between organizational learning capabilities and the execution of knowledge creation mechanism? which role dose the characteristic of knowledge play between situations of knowledge creation and the execution of knowledge creation mechanism? Through the questionnaire survey method, our study gains some conclusions and implications for management practice and academic research.
Empirical results show that: a NPD team’s organizational learning capabilities (learning intent, absorptive capacity, integrated capacity) and situations of knowledge (creative intent, redundancy, requisite variety) have a significant influence on the execution of knowledge creation mechanism, and the execution of knowledge creation mechanism also has a significant influence on the performance of NPD. Forby, the characteristic of knowledge (observability) indeed plays a moderator between organizational learning capabilities and the execution of knowledge creation mechanism, and also between situations of knowledge creation and the execution of knowledge creation mechanism
