It is a service extended from Table of Content (TOC) services. SDI service plays an important role in today’s personalized services in college libraries. This study has two parts: the first part deals with investigating the current status of SDI services in 7 college libraries in Taiwan. The second part is a survey of SDI users in National Central University Library. According to the data collected from two surveys mentioned above, the results of the study reveal that all the libraries surveyed provide electronic SDI services; Usually one professional librarian takes charge of the SDI service in each library; statistics was done periodically; the retrieved documents were sent to users by e-mail every week; no user survey was conducted in any library; most libraries let users key in and maintain their interest profiles; librarians did not examine users’ key words; and “setting up user interest profiles” is a difficult factor in providing SDI services. After analyzing data from 102 questionnaires sent by e-mail, the user study found that male users are more than female users, students take the largest part of the user population. The results of the study are as follows: Most SDI users obtained the information of SDI service through library user education; most users have take advantage of this service for less than two years; near 70% respondents have no problem in entering data; the most revealed problem is selecting the keyword and the logical relation between keywords and sources; 90% of the respondents would revise interest profile, ask colleague, or ask the librarian to solve the problems in using SDI services. Suggestions raised in this study include conducting more user studies and more extension services in college libraries; improving the promotion of SDI services. Improving the checking function of ID and passwords; the selection option of the format of output; improving the statistics function of the system; building automatic thesaurus; adding electronic user feedback function; improving interface management and the development of personalized services. 碩士 === 輔仁大學 === 圖書資訊學系 === 91 === Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) service is a personalized current awareness service provided by the library.
