The paternal involvement, paternal self-efficacy, and parent-child relationship satisfaction in male''s eye: an analysis of preschoolers'' fathers around the HsinChu Science-Based Industrial Park.

碩士 === 輔仁大學 === 生活應用科學系碩士班 === 91 === Abstracts This research tries to understand the concept of paternal involvement, and whether it affects paternal self-efficacy and satisfaction level of parent-child relationships. The researcher will discuss the historical change, the concept of paternal involvement, and factors that hinder it. The research finds that paternal involvement includes not only discipline and chores, but also another important concept, which the researcher defines as emotional involvement. Furthermore, the researcher finds, based on previous qualitative interviews, that fathers exhibit greater self-confidence and self-affirmation after parental involvement. Therefore, paternal self-efficacy was added as a variable to explore its relatedness with the satisfaction level of parent-child relationship. Researching questions are as follows: 1. What is the quality of participants'' paternal involvement? 2. Which of the background variables have a primary affect on paternal involvement? 3. Does paternal involvement increase paternal self-efficacy and parent-child relationship satisfaction? 4. How does the level of paternal self-efficacy affect the level of parent-child relationship satisfaction? This research targets the seven preschools around the HsinChu Science-Based Industrial Park. A total of 948 questionnaires were passed to the preschoolers’ fathers, and 780 were collected valid. The research finds that the father’s social and economic status, and working place, as well as the child’s gender, and whether the wife had employment or not, each have varying degrees of influence on paternal involvement, paternal self-efficacy, and the satisfaction level of parent-child relationship. The three items of paternal involvement (discipline, chores, and emotional involvement) have various clear influences on paternal self-efficacy. A father''s involvement in discipline, chores, or emotional involvement respectively can each increase his paternal self-efficacy. As the satisfaction level of parent-child relationship is concerned, the paternal emotional involvement and paternal self-efficacy are the two most influential variables. In others words, when a father has emotional interaction with his preschooler, his paternal self-efficacy will clearly increase and a more satisfactory parent-child relationship will be sustained.
