To be able to manage and manipulate data downloaded from the Internet, there is a strong need for mobile databases for mobile devices. Therefore, in this thesis, we designed and implemented a mobile database for Java phones. XML is adopted to describe the data. In addition, XSLT is used to describe processing rules so that the processor does not have to be re-designed whenever processing rules are changed. Due to mobile device’s constraints such as limited memory and small screen, the retrieved data should be small and accurate. Therefore, we designed a mediator based on ontology and RDF/RDF Schema in the server side. The mediator contains a ontology repository. The ontology repository contains a domain ontology and a task ontology. We use ontology to describe database’s schema. In addition, vocabulary and functions in domain knowledge are described by ontology. RDF/RDF Schema is adopted to describe ontology.
