We also evaluate the relationship between musculoskeletal disorders and the psychological stress in addition to physical fitness status of nurse. Method:Eight hundreds and twenty six nurses, from twenty-three working units of a hospital in central Taiwan, were involved in the study. A questionnaire was used to evaluate the prevalence rate of musculoskeletal disorders including frequency and severity at onset. MSDs checklist developed by OSHA was employed to evaluate ergonomics risks for all units. The physical fitness tests were conducted for one hundred and forty seven nursing staff with high risk of MSDs evaluated by OSHA MSDs checklist. Results:The average prevalence rate of total musculoskeletal disorders is 65%, especially neck (42.5%), shoulder (40.6%) and back (40.2%) location were found with the highest. Bases on the MSDs checklist finding, fifteen working units of hospital were higher MSDs risk with total score exceeded 15 points, which present for further improvements of ergonomics. The operating room unit was found to be the highest MSDs score (29.73). Job physical demands of psychosocial factors were significantly correlated to nurse’s physical status and musculoskeletal discomfort, however, but there was no association between satisfaction and musculoskeletal disorders. The results of physical fitness tests in all participants were fit the Taiwan’s population norm in the normal scales except the physical strength index. The significant relationship was obtained between muscle strength, Job physical demands and musculoskeletal disorders using structure equation model (SEM). Conclusion:The musculoskeletal disorders among nursing staff in Taiwan was still serious, especially neck, shoulder and back location. Job physical demands and muscle strength are resulted in the severity of musculoskeletal disorders. Therefore, it should be promoted for stress management and physical promotion in order to decrease the risk of musculoskeletal disorders.
