碩士 === 長榮大學 === 翻譯學系碩士班 === 91 === Abstract This thesis discusses the application of translation theory to the translation of materials dealing with military technology and Chinese affairs; specifically, it details the process of the author’s translating the book entitled China’s Growing Military Power. This thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter I introduces the background and goals of this study. Chapter II presents an overview of the book and summarizes its content. Chapter III and VI comprise the main body of the thesis; the former gives a thorough account of the entire translation process from advance preparation to proofreading, while the latter discusses practical translation problems pertaining to the subject of Chinese affairs and military technology. The concluding chapter presents some suggestions based on the author’s experience in translating the book, which may prove helpful to those working in this field. The translation of the book has provided an excellent opportunity for the author to put translation theory into practice. Furthermore, the author believes that the material in the book will be informative to those that are interested or specialized in this field of study.
