It is especially true when high-tech development must be taken into account to make an operating room remain state-of-the-art. Nevertheless, not much attention and research were put forward onto this task. Furthermore, such critical tasks are usually not performed by experienced designers. Therefore, rough design, poor traffic layout, incompatible mechanical systems, are the result of these design effort. As a result, many operating rooms are force to make modification right after the initiation of the facilities. It is definitely a waste of time, cost, and effort. Thus corrective actions are called for.
This study intends to make effort on things that must taking into considerations during the design processes of the hospital operating rooms. However, in order to make the study manageable, the scope is limited to those hospitals with more than 300 beds. The study includes the overall planning of the operating rooms, the backup systems and facilities for the operating rooms, the hardware facilities for the operating processes, the building material selection for the operating rooms, and the logistic of the operating rooms including the appropriate number and the arrangement of the facilities. The purposes of the study are to investigate the design criteria of the operating rooms, to make recommendation guidelines in design. In addition, the study intends to foster the awareness of the people to pay more attention to the building of an operating room in the hope of upgrading overall hospital service standard. In conclusion, a design checklist is provided to allow designers to use it as a design guideline or check listing.
