In this study, polyamide 6 (PA 6)/metallocene cyclic olefin copolymer (mCOC) blends with different compositions were investigated through differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The DSC and DMA results showed that two distinct glass transition temperature (Tg’s) existed in the blends. The SEM results indicated the blends exhibited two morphological features, which depended on the composition. According to these results, it was concluded that the PA 6/mCOC blend is an immiscible system. It was also found that the addition of small amount of styrene-maleic anhydride (SMA) did not improve the miscibility of PA 6/mCOC blends. The DSC result further showed that the melting temperature of PA 6 was not affected with the addition of mCOC. The melt crystallization temperature of PA 6 was not affected with the addition of mCOC, either. The TGA results indicated that the heat resistant temperature of mCOC is higher than that of PA 6. The heat resistant temperature of the blends increased with the mCOC content. The DMA result indicated the storage modulus of PA 6 was higher than that of mCOC between 0℃~50℃, while the storage modulus of PA 6 decreased drastically when the temperature reached 50℃. The dynamical properties of the blends depended on the composition and the temperature as well. Basically, the crystallinity as well as the phase morphology of the blends were the two main factors determined the dynamical properties of the blends.
