Thus, the development of nursing care plan systems in hospitals represents these hospitals reach their milestone of the establishment of their Hospital Information Systems (HIS). However, nursing care plan systems are not only expensive and complicated, but also is a plan that requires long time, huge budget and many other resources. So, how to effectively develop a nursing care plan system is an important challenge for top management of hospitals. The purposes of this research are twofold. The first is to investigate the current status of nursing care plan systems in Taiwan, and the second is to identify the critical factors influencing the adoption a nursing care plan system. The steps of conducting this research are as follows. Firstly, an in-depth literature reviews and expert panels have been used interchangeably in order to propose a research framework prototype. The case study methodology was utilized in order to increase the validity of this research. A major medical center was selected as a case subject, and observations, interviews and questionnaire were used to collect relevant data from top management, application programmers and users. Several expert panels were hold to modify the research framework prototype, and conducted several pilot studies to make sure the questionnaire was suitable for the next stage use. Finally, a Census was used to collect sufficient data to test the proposed hypotheses. A total of 85 questionnaires were sent to Districted Teaching Hospitals and Medical Centers. A total of 50 valid responses were collected, and the responses rate was 58.8%. The Logistic Regression technique was utilized to test the hypotheses. The results indicated that six out of eleven factors are significantly influencing the adoption of nursing care plan systems. They are top management support, computing literacy, hospital task types, competitions, project group’s skill, and user’s participation. As the current applications of nursing care plan systems, about over an-half of hospitals (including Districted Teaching Hospitals and Medical Centers) have already used nursing care plan systems. Most of the systems developed before 2001 were developed in house, but most systems developed recently have been more toward either outsourcing or join venture.
