However, there are few studies dealing with the issue of active/passive learning in experimental psychology. In this study, the conditioned taste aversion paradigm was used to investigate the active/passive learning. Rats suppressed intake of the CS sucrose solution when it was followed by intraperitoneal injection of LiCl as the US in the passive manner, but didn’t when LiCl was given by free ingestion. This selective suppression of CS intake was not due to the intensity of US, the perception of taste, nor the route of US administration. Moreover, active learning didn’t follow the traditional contingency laws of association. The rats’ consummatory behavior in active learning fits an attribution/correlation model. The results suggest a new contingency law of causality in the associative conditioning that is manifested only when rats are under active mode of learning.
