Under the situation of few related literature, the craftmen became less and less. Consequently, it is very difficult to repair the traditional brick-structured buildings and it needs to establish the basic studies from many aspects. The same situation happened on the mortar joint. This paper finds most of the traditional buildings collapsing in a day after 921 earthquake. Most of the buildings were removed quickly after the disaster. After the disaster, although every cultural association participated the team to rescue them, it appeared to insufficient basic study papers. It leads to people had to emergently re-investigate these buildings in a short period of time but some buildings were removed before investigating. If these damaged buildings already have their basic studies, when the 921 disaster occurred, there will be some references for repairing. Whether the owner or authoritative department will have the ideas about the value of these buildings and the direction for repairing, it will help the rescue and repair. This thesis sorts out the case investigation in order to grab the important period for case investigation after the disaster. The investigating subject is the monuments or traditional buildings in the 921 disaster area and Tainan. By taking these two areas, the researcher can contrast the locality or the type of constructions. Meanwhile, this thesis takes the collected samples to do the basic analyses of physics and chemistry for analyzing the elements, compounds, and external combination types. Then establishing the basic information and inspecting method provides as the repair reference in the future, for example, acid and alkalinity, combination type and component in the mortar joint. Finally, by arranging part of the investigation consequence and analyzing every element caused the damage of mortar joints, establishes the life circle of the mortar joint.
