The purpose of this study is to investigate what professional skills volleyball athletic coaches possess in different school levels. A questionnaire survey was conducted this research. The questionnaire includes personal information and 61 items of specialties in 10 different fields. Objects of the survey are 231 volleyball coaches from elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools. There are 122 valid questionnaires retrieved and the retrieved rate is 52.81%. All the information is analyzed by an average, T-test and other statistic methods. The conclusions are as followed:
1.Most coaches are 30 to 39 years old male, graduated from college or university, and also serve as sports teachers in schools currently. The majority comes from the classes of those who have been practicing for 1~3 years and more than 22 years. Most of them don’t have coach certifications, but were school team members.
2.The volleyball coaches are found to be competent in 60 items from the investigation.
3.The results of the evaluations in different specialty vary according to school levels. 56 items are determined to be essential for an elementary school volleyball coach. However, junior high school or high school volleyball coaches have 59 essential.
4.All the volleyball athletic coaches possess only amateur skill in 36 items of the specialties. Elementary school coaches are non-professional in 26 items, while junior high school and high school coaches are non-professional in 37 and 31 items respectively.
5.There are in total 36 items of the specialties considered important but lacking in most coaches. Among them 24 items are for elementary school coaches, 36 items for junior high school ones, and 30 items for high school that need to be improved.
