Thirty-six subjects were classified into three categories according to the age of each subject: elementary students(E, N=12), junior high students(J, N=12), and senior-high students(S, N=12). These subjects underwent an overnight fast and the blood samples were collected for baseline measurements. The glucose and insulin concentrations, the blood lipid profile including HDL-C, LDL- C, and total cholesterol, and the hormones that may affect skeletal muscle growth including growth hormone and triiodothyronine, were analyzed in these fasted blood samples. Blood glucose and insulin concentrations of these samples were also measured at 30, 50, and 80 min after a 75-gram of glucose ingestion. We have found that the whole body glucose tolerance was slightly getting lower along the age. When the blood glucose concentration of each subject was normalized by fat-free mass, the S group displayed the highest mean glucose concentration and the E group displayed the lowest mean value among the three age groups (p< 0.05).
