He fell in love with the developing country and decided to remain, determined to improve the level of Western classical music performance in Taiwan. It was a momentous decision, which has benefited musicians and Taiwan's culture in ways he never imagined.
The documentary delves into the unique character of Mr. Mazer, vividly showing his humorous vitality, still burning at age 84, his passion for classical music conducting and teaching, and his reasons for spending nearly two decades living and working in a new land, 9000 miles from his home in Pittsburgh.
Few individuals could make such a dramatic shift in environment and culture. Henry Mazer has done it successfully. He has given the gift of his art, bringing out the best in his musicians, and inspiring them to perform great music throughout Taiwan and the world.
Unfortunately, Mr. Mazer fell seriously ill in February of 2001 and is currently in critical condition in the hospita.
