Summary: | 碩士 === 臺南藝術學院 === 藝術史與藝術評論研究所 === 90 === Since 1996, new discoveries had been found in the site of the Longxing Monastery around Qingzhou, Shandong Province. The discovered objects helped make a differentiation between Vairocana Buddhist Statues in Honan and Shandong Province. This paper made a search for the Iconography of Northern Qi Vairocana Buddhist Statues in both area, to further analyze and discuss the iconic differentiation of Vairocana in reference to Buddha-Avatamsaka Sutra which Buddhabhadra translated.
Primarily, through word-formation principle, it was found the religion development of Buddha-Avatamsaka Sutra was the key to interpret the naming of Vairocana.
Secondarily,after contrasting Vairocana Buddhist Statues and Buddha-Avatamsaka Sutra, it was found the iconic significance of Vairocana Buddhist Statues was wills of Samantabhadra in Buddha-Avatamsaka Sutra. On the assumption above, by examming the advocacy of Buddhist monks and nuns for Buddha-Avatamsaka Sutra, wills of Samantabhadra were the one Buddhist monks and nuns pursued. Therefore wills of Samantabhadra were the main religious sense of Northern Qi Vairocana Buddhist Statues.
Finally, the Icon of Northern Qi Vairocana Buddhist Statues in Honan and Shandong Province, was correspond with wills of Samantabhadra in Buddha-Avatamsaka Sutra. The characteristic of Northern Qi Vairocana was expressed by the Spirit Kings in Honan Province and the foreigner Icons in Shandong Province.
