Two hundred and thirty fifth graders participated in this study. This study was divided into four phases. In the first phase, a placement test was administered to the students and they were categorized as visual, auditory and tactile learning styles based on their sensory preferences. In the second phase, a pre-test on “animal classification” was given. In the third phase, the web-based instruction was conducted. In the fourth phase, a post-test on “animal classification” was given. In addition, a questionnaire was administered to evaluate the students’ attitudes towards learning through computer. The result shows that, for the web-based instruction, non-auditory students performed better than the auditory students in “animal classification” (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference for the visual and tactile students. Concerning the students’ attitudes on learning through the computer, the students with tactile learning style had more positive attitude than the non-tactile (M = 123.65 vs. M = 115.82). The students with auditory learning style had more positive attitude than the non-auditory (M = 123.66 vs. M = 118.42). However, there was no significant difference between the visual style and the non-visual students. This study indicates that the more active and positive attitude towards learning through computer did not necessarily lead to better learning achievements. This study suggests that teachers should take students’ learning styles into consideration and help them become more efficient learners. Moreover, in order to improve the effect of the web-based instruction, teachers should take advantage of the web monitor system and constantly monitor the students’ participation in the class. Keywords: web-based instruction; learning styles; animal classification. 吳美麗 2002 學位論文 ; thesis 145 zh-TW
