Comparisons of analytical results were made between the single-pass (without permeable barrier inserted) and double-pass operations without recycle of the same size. Considerable enhancement in the mass transfer efficiency for large mass-transfer Graetz numbers is obtainable when the recycle-effect is introduced in designing multi-pass mass exchangers with external refluxes. The effect of the permeable-barrier location on the enhancement of mass transfer efficiency as well as the increment of power consumption, is also discussed.
