The number is totaled at 2 billions now, and is growing at a rate of 15,000,000 per year. Rainwater could accumulate in waste tires, and create an ideal environment to breed mosquitoes. Burnable waste tires piles also present fire hazards. Toxic fumes could be released to endanger the public’s health. The problem of recycling waste tires becomes a serious issue. To recycle waste tires in Taiwan, in addition to reuse, the tires can also be cut apart, buried in landfills, and used as fuel. Because of the high cost of recycling waste tires using these methods, it would be very beneficial if the waste tires could be used in retaining wall, reinforced slope, shoulder reinforcement, embankment, and slope protection. Waste tires could become a resource. Currently the researches of waste tires recycling mainly involve the use of crumb rubber of tire shreds. Little emphasis is place on intact tires. Some studies build a real size model to simulate the structures constructed with intact tires. These studies on these models only obtained the outside failure situation of the structures constructed with intact waste tires at some backfill condition. If we understand the inside failure situation about the intact waste tires, we can predict the outside failure situation of all kinds of the structures constructed with intact waste tires. Therefore, this study established a whole tire direct shear apparatus to study on the shear strength parameters for intact waste tires. First, this study introduce the specification of tires, the recycling methods of waste tires, the example of structures constructed with intact waste tires, and the study on intact waste tires at the moment. Then, general physical properties tests are conducted, and the shear strength parameters of the whole tires and cut tires filling sand or gravel are obtained by using the shear strength parameters for intact waste tires. It is hoped that this study will increase the knowledge of recycling intact waste tires in geotechnical engineering, and the results of this study can be used for future designs of retaining walls, reinforced slope, and embankment.
